The Sooke Region is home to a growing number of established and emerging writers.

The Sooke Writers’ Collective will announce the winners of the annual Edward Milne Community School student writing contest and feature local literary talent in a live reading event at Sooke Region Museum on May 28.

Six winning entries from students in poetry and short fiction are included in the new book Write from Sooke – Sooke Writers’ Collective Anthology Four.

“Once again, there were many strong entries and our volunteer judges had a challenging time selecting winners from the talented student participants,” said Deb Clay, who coordinated the anthology’s production and contributed the book design.

The annual writing contest is a tradition started by the Sooke Scribblers – the predecessor of the Sooke Writers’ Collective. Student winners receive cash prizes and publication in the annual anthology.

The live reading event will celebrate the student winners and showcase emerging and established writers of fiction, poetry, memoir, non-fiction and screenplay – all of whom write from Sooke.

David Reichheld – a local author who recently received an award in the 2017 Island Short Fiction contest for the short story Sombrio Beach – will MC the event.

The local Sooke region features in the setting of many of the works in the 2018 anthology.

The book launch runs from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Sooke Region Museum pavilion.

Along with that is free admission with complimentary coffee, tea and snacks.
