The Sooke Youth Council is launching a women's inter-generational mentorship program at the Mayor's Advisory Panel on Wednesday August 14 (Prestige Hotel, 7 to 8 p.m.).
"Sooke residents have so much to offer — we are a vibrant, passionate, and talented community," writes Ebony Logins, the Sooke Youth Council Coordinator, in communication with the Sooke News Mirror. "Our goal is to build a database of the skills and abilities of our community members to help increase the overall capacity of our community, with a focus on youth ages 13-21."
The Youth Council is looking for "local female role models who are interested in helping young women stay active in Sooke."
This initiative is part of a 10-month PeerNetBC project called Building Inclusive Communities (BIC), which focuses on creating opportunities for intergenerational mentorship.
"In the BIC program, we are one of 5 groups across BC who are helping each other solve community problems by sharing experiences and project ideas," writes Logins. "We believe that creating mentorship opportunities with peers and between generations will help Sooke become a more vibrant community."
The Sooke Youth Council is responsible for spear-heading many initiatives that benefit youth in Sooke.
They coordinate free basketball at EMCS every Monday and Wednesday from 7 - 9 p.m. They are facilitating an Ella Beach clean-up on August 25 that starts at 10 a.m. and wraps up with a barbecue at noon. Food, gloves and garbage bags will be provided. And, they are organizing a youth dance at the Sooke Community Hall on August 30, from 6 - 10 p.m.
