Sooke is no stranger to music. Either in bands or as solo performers, musicians big and small come to town and ease us into their beat and their soul.
This time comes the local voice of Katrina Kadoski, a life-long Sookie and avid musician. She has two concerts coming up this Sunday; one in Jordan River, another in Sooke, to celebrate her latest album, Dreamtime.
With the new release, Kadoski hopes to “open hearts and console with haunting songs of comfort.”
“This album is like a hot chocolate on a stormy night. It is rich, dark and warm. It encompasses both the storm and the sweetness,” she said, adding that it’s also about a personal journey.
The concerts will feature songs from the album such as Air Balloons, Journey and Beautiful Mystery. All three certainly paint Kadoski’s unique style of indie-folk-pop, presenting a soft, yet energetic voice.
The seven-track album is the result of a 10-years-in-the-making journey through music and life. It was then when she met fellow musicians Scott and Jen Smith at a songwriting retreat in Alaska. This past January, the trio regrouped in Baltimore, Maryland, to record Dreamtime at the Smiths’ Wood and Stone Room Studio.
Like all her songs, there is deep meaning behind her latest work.
“Some of the songs are very personal reflections of people I am in close relationships with,” she said. “Others are about my inspirations from digging into the cave of the heart and imagining the boundlessness of the soul.”
Having studied music, written songs and been on the stage since she was a kid, music is something that’s both familiar and dear to Kadoski.
“Music has been a huge part of my life, I grew up listening to my grandmother sing, play fiddle and accordion, and my father play guitar,” she said.
Concerts are this Sunday, April 17: Far Out Pizza in Jordan River from 2 to 4 p.m., and another later that evening at the Temple Home in Sooke from 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.
