American composer, conductor and arranger Sean O’Loughlin has been named the Victoria Symphony’s new Principal Pops conductor.

Widely known for his commissions with the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl orchestras, O’Loughlin’s music is infused with his characteristic vibrant rhythms, passionate melodies and colourful scoring.

The appointment comes four years after the retirement of audience favourite Brian Jackson. O’Loughlin has collaborated with some of the most popular artists of the last century, including Adele, Jerry Garcia, Sarah McLachlan, Steven Tyler and Josh Groban.

Kathryn Laurin, CEO of the Victoria Symphony, said O’Loughlin has built a wonderful relationship with the VS musicians over the past few years, and his connection with the Pops audience is a natural one.

“We’re thrilled to have such a talented, well-versed musician join the Victoria Symphony,” Laurin said. “Sean will begin his tenure during the 2018-19 season and is already involved in programming next season.”

Currently the Principal Pops Conductor of Symphoria, a new pops symphony in Syracuse, New York, O’Loughlin is in town this Saturday (Oct. 28) to conduct two performances of Hollywood Thrillers with local pianist Lorraine Min, at the Royal Theatre.
