The District of Sooke is seeking community input on a proposal to enhance local crosswalks with pedestrian flashing lights.

The goal is to improve safety and promote walking and biking.

This initiative is part of the district’s climate action program, which aims to increase pedestrian accessibility and reduce carbon emissions.

Residents can share their thoughts on potential crosswalk locations and express their pedestrian safety concerns by May 15 by submitting feedback online or by calling 250-642-1634.

The project is limited to local roads and does not include Highway 14.

The district will consider several factors in deciding where to install the new flashing lights. Although pedestrian activity is a primary consideration, low pedestrian numbers may indicate existing safety issues, which new crosswalks could help address. Other factors include traffic volume, visibility, and proximity to key groups such as schoolchildren.
