Woman murdered in Sooke

On Sunday, Jan. 8 at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sooke RCMP attended a residence on Otter Point Road after receiving a call for assistance.

When they arrived they found a deceased 53-year-old woman. Alex Conte, 21-years-old was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder. The victim and the suspect were known to each other and the suspect is known to police. Police would not confirm what the relationship was between the victim and Conte. He is currently in custody pending a court appearance, the date and time which has not yet been determined. The suspect will appear, via video, in West Shore Provincial Court on Thursday, Jan.12 at 9:30 a.m.

Members of the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, with assistance from the Sooke RCMP, are continuing their investigation into the murder. Members of the Forensic Identification Section are currently at the scene where they are conducting a forensic examination.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin. Alex Conte was a well known skateboarder and attended Edward Milne Community School.

No cause of death or further information is available at this time.

This is the first murder on Vancouver Island in 2012.
