No evidence of wrongdoing
Back in October, 2011 Mayor Janet Evans advised that she instructed the RCMP to investigate how confidential information was leaked from in-camera meetings.
She alleged that a particular out-spoken councillor gave information to a Victoria daily on details of a legal services contract without council’s authorization.
The RCMP investigated and they could not find any evidence to support a charge under s. 117 of the Community Charter or under the s. 5 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
At the same time a new contract was awarded for legal services to the tune of $570,000 over five years. The contract has since been amended by the new council to pay for service rather than maintain legal services on a retainer-type arrangement.
