Sooke Harbour diesel spill evaporated
The diesel spill in Sooke Harbour, reported to the Sooke Fire Rescue Service at 8 p.m. Thursday night, has dissipated on its own.
Fire Chief Steve Sorensen said the spill stretched for one kilometre between Government Wharf and the Sooke Rotary Wharf.
The Sooke Coast Guard Auxiliary performed searches of local marinas to see if boats were leaking, and the Sooke fire department scoured beaches on foot, but the leak source could not be located.
Sorensen could not comment on the amount of diesel spilled, but stated the odour was strong on Thursday night.
Residual amounts of diesel were still noticeable around the Government Wharf at 7 a.m. this morning, but Sorensen said most of the spill evaporated on its own.
Around 8:30 a.m., the coast guard performed a fly over evaluation and determined most of the spill was gone.
"Everything seems to be okay," Sorensen said, adding testing will be performed if there are any issues within the next week.
Any boat owners who have an unexplained low tank of fuel are advised to contact the Sooke fire department at 250-642-5422.
