The Capital Regional District is backing a Victoria bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

In a letter to Louise Martin, the president of the Commonwealth Games Federation, the CRD said it supports in principle the bid, subject to a proper business case being presented and approved by local governments and institutions.

The Victoria Commonwealth Games Committee announced in June it would compete to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Durban, South Africa, was originally named to host but failed to provide financial guarantees.

The bid committee has identified significant infrastructure upgrades that would be required, including housing capacity for the athletes and coaches.
