A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after an early morning collision with a venting pipe and utility control box in downtown Victoria.

Just after 1 a.m. on May 1, officers conducting patrols in the downtown area came across the single-vehicle crash on the 600-block of Hillside Avenue.

The 2600-block of Government Street was closed for several hours while traffic analysts and patrol officers investigated the scene, and public works staff assisted with clean up and street sweeps, and the roadways reopened at around 7 a.m.

The driver was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and officers are still investigating to determine the cause of the collision and they believe speed was a factor.

VicPD believe speed was a factor in the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash-cam footage can contact the E-Comm report desk at 250-995-7654 extension 1.
