A 57-year-old man was rescued from the Sooke Potholes on Sunday afternoon after his kayak capsized into the water.
The man was trying to put on his life jacket near the shoreline of the Sooke River when the craft tilted sideways, said Sooke Fire Rescue Lt. Chris McCrea, who was among the first emergency responders on the scene.
After capsizing, the man swam to the the nearest shoreline, which was across the river near the first Sooke Potholes parking lot, where he called for help. Sooke Fire Rescue members arrived around 3 p.m. to escort the man via trail up to an ambulance at the top of Phillips Road.
The man was treated at the scene for being submerged in cold water, but was otherwise uninjured.
Sooke Fire Rescue and RCMP members helped with the rescue, Metchosin Fire Rescue and Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue were called but services weren’t required.
