Telus eyes mural for centre of Sooke

District could soon call on artists to help fulfil the long-awaited artwork

The District of Sooke could soon call on artists to help fulfil a long-awaited Telus mural in the centre of Sooke.

The idea of a mural, one that would jive with Sooke and reflect Telus’ “the future is friendly” slogan, has been floated for some time. It is closer to becoming a reality now, thanks to the combined effort of the now-decommisioned Sooke Program Arts committee.

Drew Johnston, the former committee’s chair, told council last week that a Telus representative was interested in the committee’s proposed Art and Adventure theme, which would focus on the variety of outdoor adventure opportunities in the Sooke area, such as the Potholes, beaches, hiking, kayaking and mountain biking.

The mural is proposed to go on the Telus building across from Route 14 restaurant possibly on the front facing the highway and maybe on one or both of the sides.

Johnston added the district would be tasked to host the call for artists, while Telus will narrow it down to three or five individuals, and make a final decision.

Telus will pay for the $10,000 mural.
