First responders in Sooke have been sent to help with the B.C. forest fire crisis.

Three firefighters left Thursday, with a crew from Metchosin and Langford, and Sooke Fire Rescue’s Engine 3, a backup fire truck.

“We’ve got lots of volunteers helping out a lot here to make sure we have enough coverage and aren’t stretching ourselves too thin,” said Fire Chief Kenn Mount. “We’ve been busy, but we’re all on guard and ready.”

The RCMP has also sent Const. Fletcher Chisholm to the Interior, and are planning to rotate more officers in at the end of July and the start of August. Chisholm was set to come back to the Island on Friday, but has extended his stay to an undetermined date.
