It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas “Doug” James Sylvester on January 12, 2011 at Hospice House in Vernon BC. Doug will be sadly missed by his wife of 27 years Helen (nee Henley); his 5 brothers Ed (Sue), Don (Chris), Rick (Yvette), Bill (Heather) and Tim (Lindy); his 3 sisters Linda (Mark) Atkins, Judy and Betty. Doug will also be missed by his 17 nieces and nephews as well as Helen’s family (the Henley’s) and many friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents Dr. Rodney “Doc” and Margaret (nee Greta) Sylvester. Doug was born in Weyburn SK and moved to Armstrong at the age of 11 years. At the age of 18 years, he joined the Airforce as a Communications Technician where he travelled the world and had many adventures making many friends. Doug’s final posting was to Nanaimo where he and Helen reacquainted and married in 1983. Doug retired from the forces in 1984 to work for the Department of National Defence in Esquimalt, retiring again in 1998. During that time Doug and Helen enjoyed their hobby farm in Sooke, then returned to Armstrong in 2004 to be closer to family and their cabin at Okanagan Lake. Doug lived a happy life, was a great host, and a wonderful story teller. He will be sadly missed. At Doug’s wishes, he will be cremated and a Celebration of his Life will take place on the May long weekend. An announcement will be made at that time. Donations in Doug’s name can be made to the North Okanagan Hospice Society (3506 27 Avenue, Vernon BC V1T 1S4).
