Sandra Louise (nee Cooper) Brown

May 21, 2008

With great sadness we announce the passing of Sandra after a short but very courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family whom she loved dearly and this is truly a loss of a joyous spirit and welcoming soul. Beyond and above all Sandra put family first in all parts of her life.

Predeceased by James Cooper (Father), Andree Cooper (Mother), Greg Cooper (Brother), Baby James (Brother), Norman Brown (Son).

Survived by loving husband of 18 years Willard Brown, son Dwayne, daughters Teyemtenot, Lydia and Allison Brown and sisters (Dave) Ardyth Cooper, Peggy Lazzar and Stacey Akers.

Sandra grew up in Sooke and Victoria before establishing her roots in Nanaimo.  She obtained a diploma in Aboriginal Governance from the University of Victoria in 1998 and she devoted her career to helping First Nation communities, most recently at Snuneymuxw First Nation. Sandra has always been a strong promoter of Aboriginal culture and used those teachings throughout her personal life and work. Sandra was a well-admired colleague who many considered an inspiring mentor and friend.

Sandra found great joy in exploring the world with her family with the latest adventure spending New Years Eve at Times Square in New York City. Her other interests included camping, cooking, playing cribbage, crocheting, and throwing parties which suited her vibrant personality. Sandra will be forever loved and missed.
