The recent announcement of increased ambulance staffing across B.C. is a critical development and a significant stride towards enhancing emergency care in rural and remote areas.

The initiative is part of the broader strategy outlined by B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix to shift away from on-call shifts and move towards more full-time positions, aiming to improve paramedic working conditions and enhance accessibility to ambulances in historically underserved regions.

Port Renfrew, among the 60 identified communities, will experience a shift to a mixed staffing model, ensuring eight part-time staff members are on duty for 16 hours a day, with an additional eight hours on call. This transition promises to double the availability of paramedics compared to the current situation, leading to faster response times and improved emergency care for the residents of Port Renfrew.

The significance of this change is underscored by the support from various stakeholders, including the Capital Regional District, Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce, and Paachedaht First Nation, who have long advocated for improved ambulance services in the region.

As highlighted by Jason Jackson, president of the Ambulance Paramedics of B.C., the new models increase ambulance services and address longstanding issues of working conditions. These changes, coupled with the recent contract amendments are crucial steps in alleviating the paramedic shortage crisis faced by the province.

This initiative is about equity – ensuring that every community, regardless of size or remoteness, has reliable access to emergency care. Implementing these models signifies a commitment to the well-being of residents in Port Renfrew and other rural communities, marking a positive shift in the landscape of health-care services in British Columbia.
