It was great to see the Sooke Builders Association giving away seedling trees to visitors at the recent Seedy Saturday event. Recently, a Sooke resident gave 500 trees to all Grade 1 to 3 schoolchildren to plant. The Friends of Sooke Parks has planted 12 large trees in various parks and is also giving free trees to children at the upcoming Sookearama and Earth Day events.

Hopefully, many of these trees will grow to be the 200-year-old plus elder trees that British Columbia is so proud of.

Our air quality in B.C. was once the envy of the world, and our trees played a major role in this. Burning our forests and gases has put our climate, environment, and reputation at risk. How much risk we are willing to take is a collective decision we all have some part in.

Supporting planting new trees and preserving historical elder trees is a part all members of the Sooke community can play.

More trees, yeah!

William Wallace
