Move ceremony to park
Sooke has grown, and the very important Remembrance Day ceremony has outgrown its Legion Parking lot venue.
Unless we move the ceremony to a bigger space, children growing up in Sooke will only remember Remembrance Day ceremonies as muffled voices, the backs of heads, and long crowded waits. The children will not remember the speeches, the choir singing or the wreaths being laid during this important time, and Remembrance Day will soon lose its meaning to this new generation.
It is time to move the ceremony, or part of it, to a larger more public space. The parade route could easily end there. Ed Macgregor Park would provide the perfect backdrop for remembering those who did so much for our country (and still do). Of course we would need to come up with a way to get flag poles there but that can’t be too difficult considering the feat of creating the boardwalk.
The Legion itself will still continue to play an important role, and many of the activities may still remain there on Remembrance Day along with the ongoing tribute to our veterans via various functions throughout the year.
Just a thought to keep this special day closer to the hearts of our young people.
