Sooke Shukokai Karate (SSK) has been holding Fit4defense sessions for children from Pacheedaht First Nation at the Port Renfrew Recreation Centre.

The program started in April and will run until September. Sessions are held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The group currently has 11 students.

According to Alida Ensil, SSK sensei and co-founder, Fit4defense teaches kids about self-defence, assertiveness skills and to be aware of surroundings and dangerous situations.

“It’s really good to see kids who are timid to leave with a bit of a voice,” Ensil said.

The program is designed for 10-weeks, but can be altered for smaller sessions.

Ensil hopes to see the program in local schools.
