Sooke Legion 54-50s hold 11th tourney
The Sooke Legion 54-50s held their 11th annual slow pitch tournament from Aug. 17 to 19 for the Mixed Masters league at Fred Milne Park.
The tourney saw seven teams participate from Sooke, Victoria, Langford and Courtenay, including the Sooke Legion 54-50s, Wolverines, the Glove, Shakers, Stingers, Tuggers and Courtenay Woodys.
Rod Sluggett, Sooke Legion 54-50s coach, said the purpose of the adult league is simply exercise, fun and friendly competition.
“It’s for fun and camaraderie -- that’s what we do,” he said. “What else would you do on a hot August day? Play ball and take in nice, cold beverages.”
“There’s no serious competitiveness, although there is, we try and say there isn’t,” he laughed.
At the end of the tourney, all teams received some recompense.
For the A division, the Tuggers took first, followed by the Courtenay Woodys, Sooke Wolverines and Langford Shakers.
In the B division, the Sooke 54-50s were first, followed by the Sooke Glove and Stingers.
The league will hold a season wrap up tournament in Courtenay on the Labour Day weekend.
