The Sooke Loggers head into their game this afternoon with the Newfoundland Galway Hitmen and it is this game that will decide first place in the round-robin portion of their schedule at the 2018 Canadian National Senior Men’s Fastpitch Softball championship in St. Croix, Hants County, N.S.

The Loggers rolled over the Wiarton, Ont. Nationals 8-2 earlier today to improve to 5-0.

Newfoundland defeated the Bulyea Rustlers from Saskatchewan 8-0 to also go 5-0.

In the Loggers 8-2 win, they scored three runs in both the first and third innings and added two more in the fourth.

The three first innings runs came on a pair of walks and a three-run home run from catcher Kyle Cowick. For Cowick, they were his third, fourth and fifth RBIs of the tournament in five games.

Tyson Barkman doubled home three runs in the third and his hitting .625 through five games.

The final two runs came from Dan Lee’s two-run homer after Kris Walushka singled. Derrick Mason is hitting .462 through five games going 6-for-13 with four of six of his hits being home runs and in the process driving in 13 runs in five games.

Playoffs begin Saturday morning and the Loggers have been guaranteed double life – meaning they will have to lose two games Saturday and Sunday before being eliminated.
