Bryan Colwell wins heavyweight division at Boxing Canada National Championships

Sooke boxer Bryan Colwell is a national champion.

Colwell, 27, knocked out Quebec’s Jean Nicolas in the second round of the final to be crowned heavyweight champion at the Boxing Canada National Championships, held in Quebec City from April 24 to 30.

In preliminary rounds, Colwell beat Ontario’s Adam Funnell by unanimous decision and Quebec’s Karl Beaulieu in a split decision.

“It was a good week,” Colwell said after his championship win. “I went there well prepared and expected to win.”

Colwell, 27, was born and raised in Fort St. John and moved to Greater Victoria to pursue a soccer scholarship at the University of Victoria

As Colwell headed to a local gym to work on his cardio for soccer, he got hooked on mixed martial arts, which transitioned into kick boxing and boxing. Colwell has since gone on to amass a 19-4 boxing and kickboxing record.

Along with his national title, Colwell is the reigning Boxing B.C. champion three years running, four-time Golden Glove champion and has competed not only in B.C. but also in Oregon, Washington and Alberta.

“Bryan Colwell’s amateur boxing record is impressive,” said Ellen Connor, Colwell’s coach at the Sooke Boxing Club.

“I 100 per cent believe in him and know his drive and determination is far greater than anyone else I’ve seen.”

With the win in Quebec City, Colwell now has the opportunity to be on the national team and represent Canada on the international stage.

“My dream is to fight in the Olympics in four years,” Colwell said, noting there’s also the upcoming World Championships later this year in Germany and the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru.
