This event is all about supporting the Sooke Food Bank when it desperately needs a helping hand.

"We've done the Sooke Craft Fair and Artisans Market to help the food bank for many years," said event organizer Stephanie Lumley. "But the need is even greater now. They had to close their doors twice this year because they ran out of food so it's a crisis situation, and they need all the help they can get."

Admission is by donation of a non-perishable food item, and organizers will also be collecting new, unwrapped toys, pet food, toiletries, and cash donations.
"We will have raffles, including one for a colourful handmade tree skirt, and for the first time, a beautiful Christmas tree covered with handmade ornaments made by the many creative artisans in our community," Lumley said. "Buying a unique ornament is a great way to support our local artisans, with all proceeds going to our local food bank."

Santa Paws, alias Bailey the service dog in training, will be all dressed in his holiday best to entertain, and children and families can have their picture taken with Bailey between 1 and 3 p.m. both days, for a donation to the food bank.

"We hope to make a huge difference this year because so many people in our community are struggling just to put food on the table," Lumley said. "We had a fundraising event in November that raised more than $1,000 for the Sooke Food Bank, and we hope to top that total at this event. Stay local, buy local, and support your community."

The Sooke Craft Fair and Artisans Market takes place on Saturday, Dec. 14 and  Sunday, Dec.15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sooke Community Hall at 2037 Shields Rd.
