Where there's smoke, there's rules and regulations.

The District of Sooke is reminding residents to follow the seasonal backyard burning regulations to ensure safe and responsible burning practices. Burning is permitted from Nov. 1 to April 30.

Burning is only allowed on days when the venting index is rated as “Good.” You can check the index daily on the Environment Canada website.

Residents are also urged to take steps to ensure safe and clean burning by storing wood and other burnable materials in a dry, covered area to reduce moisture as burning wet or damp material produces excessive smoke, which impacts both air quality and visibility in the community.

Burn only organic waste, and stick to leaves, branches, and other garden debris. Avoid burning household waste, construction materials, or treated wood, which releases toxic fumes.

In addition to checking the venting index, avoid burning on windy days to prevent embers from spreading. Never leave fires unattended, always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby, and fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area.  Explore alternatives, such as composting or chipping as eco-friendly ways to dispose of yard waste as well.

"We encourage residents to follow the regulations and burn responsibly," Sooke Deputy Fire Chief Chris McCrea said in a statement. "Together, we can reduce smoke impacts in our community while ensuring safe and compliant practices throughout the season."

The district thanks residents for their cooperation and commitment to safe outdoor burning, and asks them to report burning concerns to District of Sooke Bylaw Services, which is available seven days a week at 250-642-1634.
