Finlay Grant (Damian),  Michael Norman (Janis Sarkisian),  Violet Barrett (Cady Heron), Ali Jarnesky (Karen Smith), Zya Rempel (Regina George), and Cecilia Gutierrez-Miller (Gretchen Wieners) star in Mean Girls JR.

The following news might have fans of the movie Mean Girls saying, “That’s so fetch.”

Amber Academy Youth Fine Arts Society has adapted the Broadway hit musical and beloved movie for young performers and is set to present Mean Girls JR. at Edward Milne Community School’s Sooke Community Theatre.

Mean Girls JR. follows Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan in the 2004 film) as she’s thrust into the concrete jungle of high school in suburban Illinois after immigrating from the African savannah. Soon, she’s in the sights of 'The Plastics,' the school’s popular trio of frenemies led by queen bee Regina George. Doing her best to fit in and navigate high school life, Cady tries to gain the group’s approval in a scheme that spirals out of control, learning the hard way that, “you can’t cross a queen bee without getting stung.”

Taking a musical theatre approach, this Sooke adaptation will explore themes of friendship, authenticity and accountability with humour.

Seventeen actors aged 11-16 from Amber Academy’s advanced theatre class will bring the one-hour show to life under the helm of instructor Simon Paterson.

Violet Barret, 11, is set to play the lead role of Cady Heron, and Zya Rempel, 13, plays the part of Regina George.

“Amber Academy is one of the best acting groups I’ve been in, and I personally think that the shows they put on are phenomenal. I’m really excited about playing Regina George and even though it may be tough, I am really excited to put on this show,” Rempel said.

Mean Girls JR. runs Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $16 in advance or $18 at the door (pending availability) and available at Forbes Pharmacy Sooke or online at www.amberacademy.ca/events. Limited tickets may also be available at the door.
