Greater Victoria is gearing up for the ultimate NHL hockey fan experience coming to Esquimalt.
On Feb. 16 and 17, Rogers Hometown Hockey brings a live broadcast, NHL Alumni, and a number of hockey-related activities to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt.
“When we heard Support Our Troops was involved, we leapt at the chance to once again help shine the spotlight on a national organization that does so much for members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans and their families,” said Captain (Navy) Jason Boyd, base commander, CFB Equimalt. “We also thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to share a game many of us love with everyone on and off the base as well as our friends and neighbours like local First Nations and the Township of Esquimalt.”
The two-day festival of hockey features games at Wurtele Arena, appearances by former NHL stars, a host of activities related to the game all culminating in a live broadcast of the Montreal Canadiens taking on the Florida Panthers featuring Ron MacLean, Tara Slone, and Don Cherry.
Looking for a futuristic hockey experience? Fans can finally play with their favourite players using virtual technology. World-renowned hockey acrobat Paz will be there juggling pucks and flaming hockey sticks from the the top of a hockey net.
“Local hockey or any sport for that matter is something the Base wants to support because many of our military and civilian members devote so much of their time to the game,” Boyd said. “They coach, they officiate, they play, they volunteer at every level of the game from atom to oldtimer. We think giving fans of every age a chance to get excited about hockey and enjoy a taste of the NHL we might not normally get to experience can only help grow the sport and the communities that support it.”
On Feb. 17, sportscaster MacLean and Slone host the Support our Troops broadcast of the Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers game at 3:30 p.m. local time.
