Organizers of a human library and archive are recruiting 12 Sooke residents who have lived experiences in active service to be become “books” at two events later this month.
The Human Library takes place at the Vancouver Island Regional Library from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 28. The Human Archive is held the next night (Nov. 29) at the Sooke Region Museum, from 3 to 5 p.m.
People who would like to be human book are asked to email Wendy Johnson at programs@sookeregionmuseum.com, Nathalie Jones at njones@virl.bc.ca, or phone 250-642-6351. The deadline for applications is Nov. 14.
“The Human Library is a place where real people and their stories are ‘on loan’ to readers,” said Jones, customers services librarian at the Sooke library, and one of the organizers of the event.
“This is a conversation between two people.”
People who would like to volunteer must have lived experiences in active service. They can include experiences as a serving member (military, police, fire rescue or paramedic), previously serving, parent, child, spouse or any other personal connection active service.
Human books will be expected to participate in both two-hour sessions the library and archive are open. When the human books are checked out, they will meet with a reader, or readers, for 15 minutes.
