Do you have all your ducks in a row yet?

Sooke Duck Day is set for May 11, where 2,700 yellow rubber ducks will race around the Sooke River.

At the finish line, five ducks will be plucked from the water and winners selected. The five duck adopters will win grand prizes of $1,000, $400, $300, $200 and $100.

The event is a major fundraiser of the Sooke Harbourside Lions, with proceeds going to local charities. Last year’s Duck Day race raised $11,000.

Alongside the Harbourside Lions are many volunteers, Sooke Lions, Girl Guides, local fishers and the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society, responsible for lining up the ducks at the start line.

Other attractions at this year’s Duck Day include a bouncy castle, children’s games, sumo suits, face painting and cupcake decorating.

A new feature is the Decorate-a-Duck competition. Select local businesses are invited to decorate a wooden duck. The decorated ducks are displayed during the day, and Duck Day participants can vote for their favourite.

Duck adopters meet at The Flats on Sooke River from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The duck race begins at noon.

To adopt an individual duck is $5 and a Quack Pack (five tickets) is $20. Tickets are available at Pemberton Holmes, Sooke Laundry, Sooke Community Thrift Store, Sooke Campground, and at The Flats on Duck Day.
