Students and parents at Savory Elementary school now have front row seats for school performances, thanks to the Prince Edward branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the school’s Parents Advisory Council.

A donation of $3,000 from the Langford-based Legion enable the school to purchase portable risers, folding rows of seats that can be moved to different parts of the school to accommodate a variety of seating arrangements.

The risers will serve several functions, explained Tanya Gesslein, treasurer for the Savory Parents Advisory Council. “We can use them in the music room so the kids don’t have to sit on the floor,” she said, adding that has been the case for the past year because of a move to portable classroom. The risers can also be used for concerts and other events. “We got them in time for the Christmas concert, which gave parents a much better view of the performance,” she added.

Gesslein was effusive in her praise for the Legion’s support and generosity. “It’s not the first time they’ve helped us out,” she noted. “They’ve donated thousands of dollars during the four years I’ve been involved with the PAC, everything from Smart Board technology to school supplies. The Legion hasn’t just helped our school, they’ve made donations to other schools as well. It’s a big deal for us, and really makes a difference in the community. We really appreciate their help, it goes a long way.”

Legion president Norm Scott said they are always happy to help out students and PACS with new equipment and supplies that help improve educational opportunities for children in the community.

Savory principal Kerry Arden said they are very grateful to the Legion and the PAC for making the purchase possible.
