SEAPARC has launched a new program aimed at getting seniors more active and connected in the community.

The 50+ drop-in social programs began last week and offer board games on Tuesday, creative crafting on Wednesday and card games on Thursday. The program runs each day from 1 to 3 p.m. There’s a $2 drop-in fee.

The new program is in addition to other fitness and sports drop-in programs offered at SEAPARC.

“A lot of times seniors feel isolated in their homes and might not know other people are in the same situation,” said Colleen Hoglund, program services manager at SEAPARC. “These types of programs are important for not only their mental well being but improving their health.”

Canada saw its largest ever increase in the proportion of senior citizens in the five years ending in 2016, such that for the first time in history there are now more Canadians over 65 than under 15, according to newly released data from the 2016 census.

The proportion of senior citizens was up 20 per cent, while Canada’s overall population was up five per cent.

Sooke sees that increase, too, and with the closing of the Sooke Seniors Drop-In Centre, there’s an ever growing need for seniors program throughout the region, Hoglund said, noting they’ve also received feedback from the Sooke Age Friendly Committee.

”SEAPARC is committed to supporting citizens to age actively within the community, and as a result introduced these new drop-in programs. We will also be looking to expand our programming for seniors in the fall, and are open to hearing what the community would like to see us offer.”
