Sooke Awareness Film Night tackles wildfires

Era of Megafires airs on Oct. 10

Awareness Film Night launches its 2018-2019 season on Oct. 10 with the film Era of Megafires followed by a post-screening conversation with Jens Wieting from the Sierra Club of B.C.

The rise of highly destructive mega fires has become one of today’s most pressing and complex problems.

Era of Megafires is a multi-media presentation that combines the research of Paul Hessberg of the U.S. Forest Service with the visual storytelling of award-winning film company North 40 Productions.

Designed to engage a wide audience, the 60-minute movie comes in the form of fast-moving short, topic-based talks interspersed with compelling video vignettes and animations and features the work of wildfire photographer John Marshall.

Wieting, who is the forest and climate campaigner with the Sierra Club, will lead a conversation on how we might be able to implement some of Hessberg’s research in our forestry management in B.C. and on Vancouver Island.

This is the 24th year that Awareness Film Night has been bringing thought-provoking films to the Sooke Region. The screening will take place at Edward Milne Community Theatre, beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation.
