ROTTEN BEEF to rude people. If someone lets you merge in traffic, a little wave would be considerate. It’s OK to say “thank you,” “please,” “excuse me,” or “hello.” It doesn’t take much, and it’s free. It’s also common courtesy.

A BIG SHOUT-OUT to the Sooke Harbour House for opening their doors to the community on Aug. 5 with such gracious hospitality. It was lovely to sip “champagne,” enjoy the lovely canapés, and wander the decks facing the beautiful views and meet all the newly employed folks who seemed so happy to be there waiting on us all!

A BIG SLICE OF BEEF to the old gent in a blue VW golf, who sped up around the roundabout on Sooke Road while people were crossing. We were all in the middle of the crosswalk when we saw him speed up He was unfazed and carried on driving — no sorry, oops, nothing. As vehicle drivers, you do not have the right of way!

BOUQUETS OF GRATITUDE and support to Ben Tourville and family. He was a real hero during our last snowstorm digging many people out at no charge, including our good friends who feared their garage roof would cave in. He is now battling cancer and needs our help: garage sale and silent auction Aug. 17 and GoFundMe.

BEEF TO DRIVERS who are speeding and turning Otter Point Road into a new highway. Beef to the RCMP for not enforcing the speed limits on our streets.

BOUQUET TO THE MAN at the bottle depot who drove up and asked if he could make a donation when I was sorting out bottles from my parents’ house. Maybe it was the medical scrub top I was wearing. Thank you so much, if I ever see you again I am definitely going to buy you a coffee.

BEEF TO OUR MEDICAL SYSTEM. My mother is 89 years old and in need of a visit with a doctor. There is no point in going to the only walk-in clinic as you usually don’t make their cut-off number and there is no point in going to hospital emergency as its not there to deal with the everyday stuff. She is registered with the province for notification when a doctor is available but it has been more than two years.

THANK YOU to the paramedics and firefighters who helped me on a scary night while I battled a respiratory virus. Your skills, comfort, and kindness will never be forgotten. You are all incredibly good at your jobs.

BEEF to those who think they are better. I am a smoker. I am not a piece of garbage to have to stand in the street to have a cigarette. I try not to bother anyone, and have worked hard my whole life. Non-smokers are not higher up the ladder than anyone else. This is my bad habit. We all have them.

BOUQUET TO SERIOUS COFFEE for the very best Africano coffee on Vancouver Island.

BEEF to the person who took my green cushion from the log at Mystic Beach. You know you’re supposed to leave things where they are for the owner to return for them, otherwise it’s theft.

BEEF TO PET OWNERS. Just to stay informed, as quoted from the David Suzuki Foundation: “One study found cats and dogs in the U.S. “through their diet, constitute about 25–30 per cent of the environmental impacts from animal production in terms of the use of land, water, fossil fuel, phosphate, and biocides and are responsible for release of up to 64 tons CO2-equivalent methane and nitrous oxide, two powerful greenhouse gasses.” Seems that responsible pet owners should pay an annual carbon tax!
