Sooke residents can celebrate their history this month through the lens of a special theme, as the district proclaims heritage week.
"Heritage connects us to our past, strengthens our sense of place, and contributes to a vibrant community," says Mayor Maja Tait.
"In Sooke, our cultural and natural heritage serve as a foundation for who we are today and inspire our future."
This year’s Heritage Week theme is Pastimes in Past Times, inviting residents to explore pastimes, games and activities that have "shaped daily life in Sooke over generations," says Michelle Richard, executive director of the Sooke Region Museum. The week will reflect on the traditions and land stewardship of the T’Sou-ke and Scia’new First Nations, plus the pioneers and industries that shaped the region.
The Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Centre will play a key role, hosting several special events, including hands-on activities, exhibits and storytelling.
Some of the weeks activities will include a treasure hunt through the Sooke Region Museum giving kids the opportunity to seek out toys and games hidden throughout the exhibits.
Starting Saturday Feb. 22, Sooke Men's Shed will allow participants to build and tinker in a workshop on independent or collaborative projects. That same day an All Sooke Day film screening will be held and will feature a number of Sooke pastimes, for heritage weeks the film will be projected on a large screen at the events pavilion.
Heritage Week will be celebrated throughout the community Feb. 17-23. It's intended as a dedicated time to recognize the importance of preserving the natural and cultural heritage that shapes the community.
More information on Heritage Week events can be found at the Sooke Region Museum’s website.
