What’s more impressive than hosting one spin-a-thon for an important cause? You guessed it, hosting two spin-a-thons for two important causes.

EMCS students are gearing up to host their second spin-a-thon of the year on Dec. 8, this time to raise money for the Sooke Food Bank. Earlier this year, they hosted a similar event for Tour de Rock.

The event will run from 2 pm on Friday until 2 pm on Saturday, where approximately 60 students will be taking half-an-hour shifts on 9 bikes throughout the 24 hours. There will also be a 10th bike that is open for the community to come and take a turn riding.

All proceeds from the spin-a-thon will go to the food bank in conjunction with the 10,000 Tonight food drive happening on Dec. 13.

“We we wanted to bring more awareness around 10,000 Tonight, and because the Cops for Cancer spin-a-thon was so successful, we thought this would try it out for the food drive as well,” said EMCS leadership student Ella Constandinou.

Everyone is welcome to stop by, as there will be hot chocolate served and music playing throughout. Donations of non-perishable food or money can be dropped off at EMCS before or during the event, but students will also be going around pledging.

This is the first time EMCS has done a spin-a-thon for the food drive, and Constandinou said the students hope to raise at least $5000 from it.

“The food bank gets really good deals on food at grocery stores, so cash donations are actually even more helpful than non-perishables,” said Constandinou.

There will also be a Facebook live stream of the spin-a-thon so people can tune in and see the riders, as well as donate from home.

“We hope to see lots of people stop by. We wanted to get the community involved by having that 10th bike open to anyone,” said Constandinou. “It’s going to be a fun way to kick off the holiday season and we are very excited to see everyone there.”
