Looking to spend less and reduce waste? Bring your items in need of repair and mending to Zero Waste Sooke's Repair Cafe, says the group of volunteers behind the event.

Zero Waste Sooke volunteers are championing the cause of sustainability and neighbourly goodwill by fixing broken toys, electronics, computers, cellphones, bikes and more. Dull knives will be sharpened; textile repairs and plastic welding will also be available.

There are no guarantees but many items can be fixed, rather than tossed into the landfill, Zero Waste Sooke said.

The organization, an action group of Transition Sooke, has offered community repair cafes and swaps for years.

Zero Waste Sooke's Repair Cafe happens on Sunday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sooke Community Hall, downstairs.

Community members are encouraged to bring anything that needs to be fixed and can be carried in – except lawnmowers and chainsaws.

Adding to the event's friendliness, coffee and tea will be served and visitors are encouraged to network while learning how to make repairs from their neighbours.

While there is no charge for the helping hands, some repairs may require the purchase of parts. The organizers also welcome donations to help cover hall rental and advertising costs.
