A new youth advocacy group in Sooke aims to provide resources and assistance to young people who want to make a positive difference in their community.
"One of the reasons I founded Youth Hope Foundation is because I have friends who want to make a positive difference in the world, but don't know how to go about that," explained Luis Almhanna about the non-profit organization he launched in August. "I wanted to show them that even a small group of people can make a difference, and after an enthusiastic discussion, we decided to work together on ways to raise funds for that purpose."
The group is hosting its first fundraiser, a screening of Jim Carrey's Christmas classic, The Grinch, on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Sooke Community Theatre at Edward Milne Community School at 6218 Sooke Rd. Tickets cost $7 at the door.
Almhanna's family fled war-torn Syria and originally moved to Calgary before settling in Sooke in 2016. He is currently in his first year of engineering at the University of Victoria.
"We hope a lot of families come out to see the Grinch and support what we're doing," he said. "We're committed to getting children and youth in the community the resources they need to make positive change."
