It may still be winter, but orchids will be in full bloom in Saanich this weekend.

The Victoria Orchid Society will put on its 30th annual orchid show at Our Lady of Fatima Hall on Saturday and Sunday .

The hall at 4635 Elk Lake Drive near Commonwealth Place will be filled with hundreds of species and hybrids of orchids arranged in a variety of creative displays for visitors to view. This event will include a silent auction table as well as a sales area where visitors will be able to purchase orchids to start or add to their collection.

“This is our 30th year presenting orchids to the Victoria community. We’re excited to showcase our members’ prize-winning collections,” said show chair Melanie Norris. “Orchids are magnificent, brightly coloured flowers – many stay in bloom for weeks. We hope visitors ask questions and learn more about growing and caring for their own orchids.”

Admission to the Victoria Orchid Show is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and free for children 12 and under. Coupons are available online at victoriaorchidsociety.com and facebook.com/VictoriaOrchidSociety for $1 off admittance. Hours are Saturday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The theme this year is ‘Orchids in Nature’ so we are sure to see some more natural elements to the displays,” said Victoria Orchid Society member Sasha Kubicek.

The Victoria Orchid Society is a non-profit group of orchid enthusiasts established in 1971 to promote and disseminate interest in the cultivation of orchids.
