The determined efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers is a key part of the engine that fuels the drive to build the Sooke Gathering Place.
The Sooke Region Community Health Network (SRCHN) has a long history of working with volunteers, with those efforts underscored in the push to raise funds for Sooke Gathering Place, said SRCHN vice-president and campaign manager Mary Dunn.
"Volunteers are essential to the work of SRCHN," Dunn said. "Like many non-profits, we have a small staff trying to accomplish big goals. Volunteers not only add so much richness and diversity to our organization, they bring new ideas, fresh perspectives and help us reach more people. The Sooke Gathering Place will be a community asset, so it's important that the community feels like they are part of it. We are so grateful to everyone of our volunteers. We believe volunteering is a great way to feel included in this project."
Marlene Barry, a member of the SRCHN fundraising committee, said according to Volunteer Canada, the number one reason people volunteer is because they are asked.
"Our committee is always looking for new and creative ways to fundraise," she said. "We need to get the word out beyond our community because $2 million is a lot to raise. There is a dire need for a seniors centre. Sooke is one of the few communities of our size in the province without one, and a lot of people are moving here when they retire."
Deb Schenk, executive director of the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce, said volunteering for the Sooke Gathering Place is a chance to support a vital community project that’s long overdue.
"This development aims to create a senior centre and more, addressing essential needs in our community," Schenk said. "I am passionate about making a difference, and I believe this project is crucial for Sooke. When the community gets involved, our efforts become much more impactful. Volunteering for what you believe in is incredibly fulfilling and benefits everyone. Together, we can make Sooke an even better place to live."
Sooke Gathering Place will be housed in the an elders complex on Wadams Way that will include affordable senior housing rental units and a multi-generational activity centre on for socializing, recreation, and enrichment.
The current total raised so far is $172,600.
