The Sooke Folk Music Society is kicking off the year with a double performance this Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church.

The event features the husband and wife duet of Niels Petersen and Connie Lebeau, who promise to bring warm tunes of the West Coast and adventure.

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Petersen has been a performing musician, producer and songwriter since his move to Canada. He’s shared the stage with artists such as Joan Armatrading, Tina Turner, Burton Cummings, Cliff Richard, Trish Yearwood and Vince Gill, to name a few.

A prolific composer, Petersen has more than 100 songs in his catalogue and has written music for television documentaries and short films, including a documentary in 2002 and a Bravo Channel art expose in 2008.

Lebeau, originally from Winnipeg, moved to the West Coast where she teamed up with Petersen and began touring from coast to coast with Canadian troubadour Valdy, as well as with Shari Ulrich, Gary Fjellgaard, Roy Forbes, Connie Caldor, and opened up for Dolly Parton. Lebeau toured extensively as a singer, bass and accordion player with family entertainer, Raffi.

In addition to her skills as a singer, Lebeau performed on Broadway in New York City’s Gershwin Theatre and also at Radio City Music Hall, where she worked with the late noted producer Phil Ramone.

Doors open a 7 p.m. with open stage at 7:30 p.m., and featured performers play at 9. Admission is $7 at the door.
