Man missing from Port Alberni home found deceased

Search and rescue crew deploys helicopter after man was discovered down a steep embankment with fatal injuries

A man reported missing overnight has been found deceased at the bottom of a steep embankment in Port Alberni.

Port Alberni RCMP responded to a report on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024 that an adult male had not returned to his family's home after leaving a friend's house at 1 a.m. He was located deceased at approximately 2:45 p.m. at the bottom of an embankment.

Port Alberni Fire Department and Alberni Valley Rescue Squad personnel attended the scene in an attempt to retrieve the man's body from the rocky, 15-metre (50 foot) cliff. The volunteer search and rescue squad requested a helicopter to hoist the man up the steep terrain several hours later.

The RCMP's Forensic Identification Services team also attended the scene. Police noted in a press release that the incident remains under investigation.

Family members have been notified, however the man's name has not been released.
