One man has been arrested and another is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in the throat during an altercation in Port Alberni on Aug. 27, 2024.

Police received a 911 call just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday that a male had been stabbed by another male in a residence in the 4000-block of Maitland Street. The victim was rushed to West Coast General Hospital and an air ambulance was dispatched to airlift the victim to another hospital for emergency surgery, a Port Alberni RCMP spokesperson said.

Emergency room staff at WCGH in Port Alberni stabilized the victim, providing life-saving intervention locally. The man remains in stable condition.

Back at the Maitland Street scene, police learned that the suspect fled on foot. Officers tracked the suspect into the early morning hours of Aug. 28 and the suspect was arrested without issue.

The 24-year-old suspect appeared in court on Wednesday and will remain in custody until his next appearance Sept. 3. Charges are pending.

The RCMP spokesperson said the two males were known to each other and there is no public safety concern.
