Sooke businesses plan festive evening

Local businesses staying open until 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6

A local business owner's fond memories of a holiday event are the inspiration behind organizing something similar for Sooke.

"I grew up in a small town like Sooke and remember a yearly event where the whole town was lit up with lights and decorations and local businesses went out of their way to make a special day for shoppers," said Robin Richardson, the owner of Sooke Yarn & Fibre. "I've lived in Sooke for eight years and thought why not try something similar here? The heart of this is encouraging people to come downtown and enjoy the festivities of the season and to support the local businesses that make up our community."

Richardson started approaching other business owners to get involved in September and quickly realized she needed help.

"I reached out to Artisan's Garden owner Mackenzie Fisher and she was thrilled with the idea and jumped in right away," Richardson said. "We decided to approach Karen Stones, the owner of A Sea of Bliss because she has experience with putting on these kinds of events.

A large number of businesses have joined the effort for the Noel Night Sooke event, and they're still adding more.

"Some of us will be serving hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and special discounts, some are planning fun little events for the event on Friday, Dec. 6, and we'll be staying open later until 8 p.m. to give more people the opportunity to drop by," Richardson said. "We want to make our little town shine."
