The B.C. NDP invested heavily in Ravi Parmar’s byelection victory, more than doubling what the other parties ponied up in their bid for the vacant seat in the Langford-Juan de Fuca riding.
The Report from the Chief Electoral Officer shows that the NDP spent $29,451.13 on Parmar’s campaign. The B.C. Green Party spent $14,376.30 on Camille Currie’s campaign, and B.C. Conservative Party’s total was $14,956.88.
Currie claimed the most reimbursement with $29,725.79. Parmar followed with a claim of $27,809.37 and Conservative Mike Harris claimed $8,444.45.
Parmar secured 7,224 votes during the June 24 byelection, equating to an expenditure of $7.93 per vote.
B.C. United received less than 10 per cent of the vote in the byelection, rendering them ineligible for election expense reimbursement.
The byelection was necessary after former premier John Horgan decided to retire, vacating the seat he held since 2005.
The next provincial election is on Oct. 19, 2024.
