Summer is here, and the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra is giving residents a unique opportunity to hear some classic tunes in the great outdoors.

The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra marks the return of its annual outdoor orchestra fling on Sunday, July 6, bringing a variety of musical styles from pop to classical, and featuring the works of Strauss to Leroy Anderson.

"This year’s concert will have a home-grown feel, featuring our own Sooke Phil soloists and sections from the orchestra," said Sharon Johnson in a news release from the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.

"Conducting this year is David Stewart, who is already familiar to Sooke audiences for his solo performances with the Sooke Phil on the violin. He is an active member of the Sooke Philharmonic Society and the Sooke Harmony Project."

The concert will also feature solo performances by former Philharmonic Fling! conductor Mike KLazek, concertmaster Hollas Longton on violin, and Jackie Kereluk on oboe.

As always, there will be a 50-50 draw, and when you donate at admission, there will be a prize draw for two lawn chairs, donated by Village Foods.

The free concert starts at 2:30 p.m. on July 6 at Ed Macgregor Park.

In the event of rain, the event will move to Sooke Community Hall on Shields Road.
