A new secondary school is about to begin the planning stage as the West Shore continues to see exponential growth.

The province will begin developing a business plan for a Langford school, which will detail scope, schedule and budget for the project.

“It’s a game-changer for our community,” said Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca, during a Tuesday (May 21) announcement. “Thirteen years ago I was a student at the old Belmont Secondary School on Jacklin Road, and we had to walk out of school to convince them to replace that school with two new high schools.”

Although still in the early planning stages, he said the school should be able to take about 2,000 students, making it the largest school in Langford, and they are looking at a plot of land “near Costco” for the building.

They plan to submit the business plan in November, though it could be delayed by an election, and it’s expected to be part of the capital plan as part of the 2025 budget.

“As more people choose to make British Columbia their home, we’re investing in schools to welcome new students,” Minister of Education and Child Care Rachna Singh said in a news release. “That’s why we’re taking action by supporting new secondary school projects in one of the fastest-growing school districts in the province.”

This year’s budget included over $3.7 billion for school capital projects over the next three years provincewide.
