Sooke Fire Rescue secures new funding for 'critical' equipment

The district received nearly $30,000 for new equipment in volunteer and composite fire departments

Sooke Fire Rescue is set to receive nearly $30,000 in new funding, allowing for some welcomed equipment upgrades.

“This funding allows us to replace and upgrade critical firefighting equipment, ensuring that our volunteer and composite members have the tools they need to respond effectively in emergencies,” says Deputy Fire Chief Chris McCrea.

“Investments like this directly contribute to the safety and resilience of our community.” The new funding comes from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) for Volunteer and Composite Fire departments.

The total funding received by the district was $28,351 and will be used to purchase new hoses and racks to “[Enhance] the department’s emergency response capabilities and ensure firefighters have the necessary equipment to protect the community,” said Christina Moog, Sooke's manager of communications in a news release.

The funding was administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) who provide financial assistance to local government, First Nations, and other applicants to improve emergency preparedness.

“Volunteer firefighters play a crucial role in protecting small communities, but battling blazes is backbreaking work–especially when they’re constantly breaking their equipment in the process,” said Dana Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat.

“This funding will upgrade equipment, providing them better protection and support to continue their essential work.”

The provincial government will provide $9 million to fund 130 projects throughout B.C., including departments in Metchosin and Mill Bay.
