Sooke opens self-serve sand bag station

The District of Sooke has reopened the self-serve sandbag station in the Ed Macgregor Park Parking Lot.

The timing couldn't be better, considering the deluge of heavy rain on the weekend.

The District of Sooke has reopened the self-serve sandbag station at Ed Macgregor Park.

"This station provides a valuable resource for residents to protect their properties from potential flooding," the district said in a media release.

The sandbag station offers sand and sandbags in the parking lot of Ed Macgregor Park at 6755 West Coast Rd. at no cost. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the spring of 2025. Residents are reminded to bring their own shovels and gloves for filling the bags.

"By opening the self-serve sandbag station, we aim to give our community the tools they need to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding," said Ryland Bennett, emergency program manager for Sooke. "We encourage residents to take proactive measures to protect their homes and properties."

Residents are advised to monitor local weather forecasts and be aware of the potential for significant rainfall because taking early action by placing sandbags around vulnerable areas can make a significant difference in minimizing damage, the district noted.

The district will continue to monitor weather conditions and provide updates when necessary through the district's website, and through the Alertable app.
