In 2018, the Sooke Regional Chamber of Commerce was in a tight spot. Created over 75 years ago to champion local businesses, the association was on the brink of collapse due to a lack of new members. This posed a serious problem. If the Chamber dissolved, the business community in Sooke would lose its chief advocate, causing the District’s economic performance to suffer.

Recognizing the importance of the Chamber, a few locals rallied to help rebuild it. One of these supporters was Victoria-based digital marketing company WebMax.

Specializing in website design, search engine optimization and brand awareness, the company built the Chamber a new website. It also created a free one for Better Buy Sooke, a Chamber initiative designed to promote local businesses.

But WebMax didn’t stop there. They also sponsored the Sooke Chamber Business Awards and reformatted laptops for the Chamber’s Computers for Students program, which provides refurbished laptops to students in need.

In the end, the business association avoided dissolution. Today, it provides full-fledged support for Sooke businesses. According to the Chamber, it has the largest per capita membership of any municipality in British Columbia.

“During those challenging times, WebMax became an essential partner, helping to restore and strengthen the Chamber’s presence in the community,” said the Chamber’s executive director Deb Schenk in a written statement. “Their contributions have been instrumental in the Chamber’s ability to navigate difficult times.”

The Chamber recently announced that it is transitioning from WebMax’s website to a new one, but thanked the company for all it has done to help since 2018.

“Your support has truly made a difference,” said Schenk. “We will always value the strong foundation you helped us build.”
