Spinner, swing set to make Sooke playground more inclusive

Designed specifically for kids aged 2 to 7, new equipment inspires playing together

New inclusive play equipment is sprouting up in a Sooke park in a bid to grow community interaction.

District staff are installing inclusive equipment, designed specifically for kids aged two to seven, at Woodland Creek Playground.

Looking to create play opportunities for children of all abilities, the new gear includes two features specifically designed to promote inclusive play – adaptive swings and a wheelchair-accessible spinner.

The swings allow children of varying abilities to swing together, promoting both interaction and shared play experiences. Similarly, the accessible spinner allows children with mobility challenges to actively participate alongside their peers.

“We are thrilled to be adding this accessible equipment to Woodland Creek Playground,” Mayor Maja Tait said in a news release. “Play is such an important part of childhood development, and these new features will ensure that every child can enjoy our playgrounds.”

The playground will remain open during construction, with the new equipment at 6523 Callumwood Ln. ready by Jan. 15.
