A Nanaimo athlete who won an Olympic gold medal at the Summer Games in Paris will have a homecoming celebration later this month.

Ethan Katzberg, who won gold for Canada in hammer throw, will be honoured at a ceremony at the Rotary Bowl on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 10:30 a.m., announced Mayor Leonard Krog in a social media post this week.

Other past and present Olympians will also be recognized, and community members are encouraged to wear red and white and bring lawn chairs.

Katzberg's throw of 84.12 metres Aug. 4 at the Stade de France earned Canada the country's first-ever gold medal in the event. His previous accomplishments included gold at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, and the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Any past Olympians residing in Nanaimo are asked to e-mail donna.stennes@nanaimo.ca.
